Application of a virtual accessibility guide
a bridge between academia and society
Abstract
This paper addresses the fruitful interaction between an extension project consisting of a Virtual Accessibility Guide and its repercussion on accessibility teaching at the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro-UFRJ. The Virtual Accessibility Guide is an application designed and made available for smartphones, tablets and personal computers, which provides information about accessible places in the city. Such information is provided by a database initially fed by scientific initiation scholarship holders. When the activities of the Guide were inserted within the scope of an undergraduate course, the students showed strong motivation for the assignment, fact that favored both the development of the project and the very content of the discipline on inclusive architecture. These students joined the group responsible for the information available in the Guide, which was gathered through the practical work assigned during the elective course on accessibility.
